Choose the entry route before comparing delivered prices
A cable order for Guatemala can arrive through the Caribbean coast, the Pacific coast or an overland route arranged by a forwarder. Those choices change the handling, inland freight and customs coordination required. Compare quotes to the same final address—especially for full reels going to Guatemala City, Escuintla or an inland plant—rather than comparing ocean freight alone.
The SAT registration belongs to the importer
Check the Guatemalan buyer's legal name, NIT and importer status before issuing final shipping documents. SAT's importer registration requirements include a NIT and an active establishment in RTU Digital. Have the buyer resolve registration or representative-access issues before the cargo reaches a terminal.
Send the broker a draft invoice with each manufacturer's part number, construction, quantity, unit of measure and declared origin. Provide gross and net weight and a reel-by-reel packing list. If a purchase order uses meters and the available put-up uses feet, agree on the supplied quantity and show the conversion clearly; do not leave the discrepancy for the declaration stage.
DUCA-D is not DUCA-F or a transit declaration
The regional DUCA guidance distinguishes trade with countries outside Central America (DUCA-D), qualifying regional-origin trade (DUCA-F) and international land transit (DUCA-T). A U.S. purchase does not become Central American-origin goods because the shipment crosses a neighboring country. Ask the broker to identify the import declaration and any separate transit procedure needed for the actual route.
If the forwarder proposes entry through another country, obtain the maritime discharge port, border crossing, customs office of destination and party responsible for transit. Do not substitute a Guatemalan port code when the vessel actually unloads elsewhere.
Caribbean and Pacific terminals have separate identities
- Santo Tomás de Castilla: the port authority identifies it as a Caribbean multipurpose terminal. In Schedule K it shares the historical Matías de Gálvez entry, not Puerto Barrios' code.
- Puerto Barrios: name this port specifically when it appears on the booking; its proximity to Santo Tomás does not make the entries interchangeable.
- Puerto Quetzal: use the official port portal for Pacific terminal information and published services. Quetzal and San José have different Schedule K entries.
For a cable pallet, request the terminal release charges, any deconsolidation, inland delivery and unloading requirements. Ask whether the reel can travel upright and whether the delivery site can receive its full weight. A scheduled vessel arrival is not a guaranteed site-delivery date.

Planning reference from CBP Appendix F, February 2022 (archived copy), not a current operational list. Before filing, have the forwarder confirm the actual port and current code against CBP Schedule K. An “other ports” entry is not a substitute for identifying a known terminal.
The Census AES instructions use Schedule K for the foreign port of unlading on vessel shipments. It is neither the tariff classification nor the U.S. port-of-export code. The authorized filer determines whether EEI is required and which data apply to the transport mode.
Origin preference and technical acceptance are separate checks
Where a CAFTA-DR preference is claimed, establish qualifying origin and retain the supporting information. Cable sold by a U.S. distributor is not necessarily U.S.-origin cable. The broker should calculate Guatemala's current tariff and taxes for the complete classification rather than assuming that every U.S. shipment is duty-free.
USTR also announced a reciprocal trade agreement signed January 30, 2026. Have the importer check implemented measures affecting the specific product and entry date. Do not use that announcement as blanket approval for all cable constructions.
Before accepting an alternate, obtain the project specification and written approval of the proposed datasheet. For industrial control work, resolve conductor size, shield arrangement and termination requirements; for building or network installations, identify the required fire-performance and installation classifications. Customs release does not establish suitability for installation.
